Program:
This
tour commences 8.45 am in Darling Harbour, at Sydney Convention
Centre Wharf, where we board the Solar Sailor
(image above), a ferry that is powered by solar energy and
wind power with diesel back-up. On the ferry trip up the harbour,
we will observe the ongoing transformation of the foreshores
from industrial sites to housing and in some cases parklands.
We will alight at Homebush Bay, where we our coach will meet
us for a tour of the former Sydney 2000 Olympic site.
There we will see the visitors centre, solar powered
lighting, the water management scheme, Bicentennial Park and
the environmentally designed houses of the suburb of Newington,
the former Olympic village.
Then to an restaurant for a healthy vegetarian
buffet lunch. After lunch the coach
will take us to Kuring-gai National Park, in
the northern part of Sydney, where we will see Aboriginal
rock carvings and stunning views. Please
note that in Summer national parks are sometimes closed when
there is bushfire danger. In this case, we will visit a bush
creek and clearing where lyre birds are sometimes seen in
the wild and then a quiet beach where a quick swim is optional.
The coach will return to the city for drop-off near Central
Railway, arriving at about 5.30 pm.
The tour fee includes travel on the Solar Sailor and the coach,
lunch, and park entrance fee, but no drinks.
Please bring your own drinking water and camera and, depending
upon the weather, sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen, raincoat,
or umbrella. We recommend that you wear comfortable casual
clothes and walking shoes. If you fancy a quick swim, please
bring swimmers and towel.
